The original Demon’s Souls was developed by FromSoftware, but it was published by Sony exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Sony owns the Demon’s Souls IP and published the 2020 remake developed by Bluepoint Games. This creates a unique situation where Sony owns the IP, but FromSoftware owns the creative DNA (combat systems, world-building style, etc). While Dark Souls is a spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls, it doesn’t quite fill the gap that a direct connection to the original could.

Fortunately, there’s a pretty clear indicator that shows when you’ve gone above 50% of your equip weight, which is where those chunky, sluggish rolls start. We imagine that some of the original game’s balance issues will be corrected, but whether or not the game is reworked to incorporate more of the refinements and alterations of later Souls games remains to be seen. Some may welcome such changes while others could argue that some of those quirks help set Demon’s Souls apart. While one might argue that this actually added to the mysterious nature of the game, the act of watching NPCs talk still feels like a definite upgrade that all future From Software games should definitely adopt.

It’s really a shame that Bluepoint went through all the trouble to remake the game from the ground up, but didn’t fix these two things. Thankfully Fexelea, Samurai_Masurao and a few others dug deeper, compiling a list of these convoluted mechanics in the first Demon’s Souls Wiki in Japanese, and eventually English. In short, the Souls community would not exist as it does today, if these hardcore Japanese players had not been the first ones to pioneer the way for the rest of us. Players expend stamina to perform actions such as attacking with weapons, blocking and parrying, dodging, and sprinting. The stamina used up for each attack depends on the type of weapon equipped, with heavier weapons requiring more stamina for each swing.
